This session is flexible with a choice to either be entirely outdoors through a shore watch session (a range of coastal locations can be utilised for this), or can be spent as an in-office learning session (or both!).
If you choose one or the other, it can be condensed into a lunch hour or early/end of day activity, for ease of staff attendance. If you would like to opt for both formats, please allow extra time.
Whether in the office or outdoors, this opportunity covers:
- Health and safety
- Overview of marine mammals in the channel islands and ID guidelines
- Step by step demo of the survey protocol for shore watches
- Discussion regarding what happens with the data and outputs so far
- How to get involved outside of work
Timings and locations for outdoor locations may need to adjusted based on availability and tide/weather conditions, but have previously included Jerbourg, Pleinmont, and the Terrace of La Villette Bathing pools.
For popular locations such as la Villette time flexibility may be required around other booked events.
Equipment including binoculars, a large monocular scope ID guides and survey forms are all provided.
For the outdoor practical experience, the maximum number of people for an individual opportunity is 20. Should you wish to up this number, there will be an additional cost, as it will be necessary for another Team member to come along. Attendees will require appropriate outdoor protection for being outdoors and potentially on uneven cliff ground (sun/wind/cold protection, weather dependant!).
For the in-office learning, as many staff can attend as needed.
Additional variations include boat-based monitoring surveys, though this requires additional costs for charter vessel hire, and numbers will be more limited due to vessel constraints. If you wish to know more about boat-based monitoring opportunities, please email marinebiology@societe.org.gg
