Marine mammal monitoring - marine citizen science

Help contribute to data recording and monitoring of our coastal population of cetaceans, while making the most of fantastic sea views around the island. Learn more about our local populations, including bottlenose dolphins and grey seals and how our La Société marine mammal monitoring programme, the Bailiwick DolFin Project, monitors populations over time.

La Société Guernesiaise was founded in 1882 to encourage the study of the history, natural history, geography and geology of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the conservation of the Bailiwick’s natural environment and the preservation of its historic buildings and monuments. In many respects, La Société Guernesiaise is similar to the UK Wildlife Trusts. However, its activities extend into many other areas, including history, archaeology and astronomy.

The Bailiwick DolFin Project is a project under the Marine Biology Section of La Société.

Format and content

This session is flexible with a choice to either be entirely outdoors through a shore watch session (a range of coastal locations can be utilised for this), or can be spent as an in-office learning session (or both!).

If you choose one or the other, it can be condensed into a lunch hour or early/end of day activity, for ease of staff attendance. If you would like to opt for both formats, please allow extra time.

Whether in the office or outdoors, this opportunity covers:

  • Health and safety
  • Overview of marine mammals in the channel islands and ID guidelines
  • Step by step demo of the survey protocol for shore watches
  • Discussion regarding what happens with the data and outputs so far
  • How to get involved outside of work

Timings and locations for outdoor locations may need to adjusted based on availability and tide/weather conditions, but have previously included Jerbourg, Pleinmont, and the Terrace of La Villette Bathing pools.

For popular locations such as la Villette time flexibility may be required around other booked events.

Equipment including binoculars, a large monocular scope ID guides and survey forms are all provided.

For the outdoor practical experience, the maximum number of people for an individual opportunity is 20. Should you wish to up this number, there will be an additional cost, as it will be necessary for another Team member to come along. Attendees will require appropriate outdoor protection for being outdoors and potentially on uneven cliff ground (sun/wind/cold protection, weather dependant!).

For the in-office learning, as many staff can attend as needed.

Additional variations include boat-based monitoring surveys, though this requires additional costs for charter vessel hire, and numbers will be more limited due to vessel constraints. If you wish to know more about boat-based monitoring opportunities, please email marinebiology@societe.org.gg

Cost

£200 for either a 1 hour office-based session, or a 1 hour outdoor practical session, led by a La Société team member.

Outcomes

  • Storytelling and PR opportunities: your company can showcase involvement in authentic environmental stewardship, resonating with customers, partners, and investors
  • Visible commitment to sustainability: participation in citizen science supports Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals and can be reported as part of CSR initiatives
  • Community engagement: this opportunity connects staff with local communities, NGOs, and environmental groups, enhancing the company's social licence to operate
  • Nature-based experiences: being outdoors in a coastal environment is shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being
  • Hands-on learning: your staff gain direct experience with coastal ecosystems and species, deepening their understanding of biodiversity, environmental challenges (habitat loss, pollution) and the impacts of climate change
  • Break from routine: it offers a refreshing change from the office environment, helping reduce burnout and increase motivation. Seawatches provide an excellent opportunity to relax the mind and provide a mental reset.
