Local environmental projects open for funding

Bailiwick Bat Survey analysis

With additional funding, we will combine bat activity data with habitat and land-cover information to identify key habitats, understand how bats use them, assess the importance of field boundaries for commuting and feeding, and pinpoint landscapes needing protection. The results will guide landowners, conservation groups, and government, supporting biodiversity outcomes.

How to Support this Project

To support this project, please contact: bats@societe.org.gg

La Société Guernesiaise was founded in 1882 to encourage the study of the history, natural history, geography and geology of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the conservation of the Bailiwick’s natural environment and the preservation of its historic buildings and monuments. In many respects, La Société Guernesiaise is similar to the UK Wildlife Trusts. However, its activities extend into many other areas, including history, archaeology and astronomy.

Project Information

Over the past four years, something remarkable happened across the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Hundreds of volunteers - many completely new to wildlife surveying - came together to help reveal the hidden lives of bats across the Bailiwick.

Night after night, across a variety of habitats, volunteers helped us deploy acoustic bat detectors, helping to build the most comprehensive picture ever assembled for bats in the Bailiwick. Read all about the results of this amazing project at the Bailiwick Bat Survey website https://bats.org.gg/

The result?

• Over 2,300 locations surveyed
• More than 9,000 nights of recording effort
• Millions of recordings analysed
• 14 bat species confirmed, including several never before recorded in the Bailiwick
• New discoveries not only for bats, but also for other wildlife such as shrews and bush-crickets detected during surveys

This extraordinary achievement was only possible because of the passion and dedication of local volunteers who gave their time to help us understand the wildlife around them.

The Bailiwick Bat Survey has already shown what a community can achieve together. With your support, we can now turn this incredible dataset into practical conservation action that protects wildlife for generations to come.

Every contribution helps us make full use of the data already collected and ensures bats — and the landscapes they depend on — continue to thrive.

We will use a professional data ecologist to –

• Carry out advanced habitat and landscape analysis
• Identify priority habitats and conservation actions
• Produce maps and guidance to support future planning and land management
• Share results with the community and decision-makers
• Build on the incredible work already achieved by volunteers

Most importantly, it ensures the effort given by hundreds of volunteers translates into real conservation outcomes.

Funding needed

We need a further £15,000.

A total of £25,000 is need for this project, of which £10,00 has already been raised.

Which UN Sustainable Development Goals does this Project contribute to?

This project helps to progress against the following UN Sustainable Development Goal:

  • #15 life on land

Outcomes

  • Supports real conservation outcomes through translation of effort given by hundreds of volunteers
  • Supports future planning and land management through production of maps and guidance
  • Shared results with the community and decision-makers
  • Turn data into practical action that protects wildlife for generations to come
  • Demonstrates environmental leadership by supporting long-term biodiversity research
  • Creates long-term legacy impact, contributing to a dataset that will be used for years to come
  • Differentiates your business from competitors by supporting a niche but highly valuable scientific effort
