Local environmental projects open for funding

Guernsey Biological Records Centre Internship Programme

The Internship Programme offers a unique opportunity for emerging data analysts to work at the forefront of nature-positive innovation, supporting research, data collation, and information sharing that drive measurable environmental impact. Interns gain hands-on experience collaborating with scientists, data providers, and the community to help build the evidence-base to protect biodiversity in Guernsey and Herm.

Overview

How to Support this Project

To support this project, please contact: office@naturecommission.gg

The Guernsey Biological Records Centre (GBRC) collects, manages, and shared information about all aspects of Guernsey's wildlife, ecology and natural environment. It provides data services to support the monitoring and protection of biodiversity, and acts as an evidence-base for land, marine, and freshwater management. Set up in 2003 as a joint project between the States of Guernsey and La Société Guernesiaise, the GBRC is now run by the Nature Commission on behalf of the States.

Project Information

The Guernsey Biological Records Centre (GBRC) is where information about local wildlife and nature in Guernsey and Herm is collected, stored, and shared. It plays a key role in helping people make informed decisions about protecting the islands' environment and is also a valuable source of knowledge for schools, scientists, and the wider public.

The Assistant Data Administrator Internship sits at the heart of this work. Interns will directly support the GBRC across data-driven projects, with guidance from the CEO and the GBRC Data Administrator. This role offers emerging talent hands-on experience in data inputting, data management, project delivery, and stakeholder engagement—skills that are increasingly vital for businesses navigating ESG, nature-related disclosures, and responsible growth.

By sponsoring this short-term internship, corporate partners help develop the next generation of environmental professionals dedicated to shaping a thriving, nature-positive economy while demonstrating leadership in sustainability, nature stewardship, and community investment.

This will be the first year the GBRC Internship Programme has been run, with the intention of offering the Internship every year.

Visit the GBRC website or Facebook page to find out more.

Funding needed

The cost of the Guernsey Biological Record Centre Internship Programme is £6,000 for 2026. This covers the following:

  • 315 hours of paid time for an Intern over the summer and festive period
  • purchase of a laptop and associated hardware, software, and system set up required for the role.

Testimonials from previous Interns

This will be the first time the GBRC Assistant Data Administrator Internship Programme will be offered. The Nature Commission Assistant Ecologist Internship Programme has been run over three years so far, and has been oversubscribed each year. It is anticipated this will also be the case for the GBRC Internship Programme.
